New Delhi, Sept 13 (ANI): At least twenty people have been reportedly killed and 50 injured in five serial bomb blasts in different places in the national capital.

The blasts took place in Karol Bagh's Gaffar market, Connaught Place, Greater Kailash-I and Barakhamba Road in a span of 40-50 minutes. One bomb was defused near high-security area near India Gate.

Indian Mujahideen has claimed responsibility for the blasts.

The blasts at Ghaffar market in Karol Bagh, Connaught Place and Greater Kailash took place in a quick succession, police said.

The first blast took place at Ghaffar market at 6.10 p.m. in which at least 20 people were injured. They were rushed to nearby RML hospital. The explosive was kept near a car. The impact of the blast was so severe that an auto was thrown up several feet.

Immediately after that, two explosions took place in Connaught Place in which at least 10 people were injured.

Another explosion rocked M-Block market in Greater Kailash-I. The bombs were hidden in a dustbin.

The impact of the blasts in Karol Bagh could be gauged by the fact that an auto was thrown up and got caught in the electrical wires.

Senior Police officials including Joint Commissioner of Police Karnail Singh rushed to the spot in the central district and were assessing the situation.

Reportedly, Indian Mujhahideen has taken responsibility for the blasts.

In an email to media organisations, Indian Mujahideen, the terror outfit that had claimed responsibility for the July 26 Ahmedabad blasts, said it had carried out the serial blasts in Delhi. It threatened that there would be nine blasts in all.

Sarojini Nagar market, scene of the pre-Diwali eve blasts in 2005, in which more than 60 people were killed, has been evacuated.

Preliminary examination of the blast site said that low intensity ammonium nitrate tied to integrated circuit had been used in almost all the serial blasts. Timer devices were used in all the blasts.

Two persons have been detained by the police for questioning. The police said that a 12-year-old boy may be able to provide clues.

The Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil has said that people should maintain calm and social harmony and understanding.

"Let us jointly fight the tragedy," he said. (ANI)

55 killed in three blasts in Delhi (from rediff.com)

Terrorists struck in the capital in a big way on the eve of Diwali on Saturday triggering three explosions in two markets and near a bus killing 55 people and injuring over 155 others, including some foreigners.

The first explosion took place at around 1740 IST in the busy Paharganj market. The market, which is frequented by foreigners, was bustling with Diwali shoppers.

Minutes later another explosion rocked Sarojini Nagar Market in south Delhi, where maximum casualties were reported.

Another blast took place 10 km further south in the Govindpuri area.

Timely action by alert crew of the state-owned bus helped avert a big disaster when they threw out a time bomb which exploded injuring five people, including the driver who is in serious condition.

Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil said 37 bodies were in Safdarjang Hospital while Union Health Secretary P K Hota said seven bodies were brought to Lady Hardinge hospital, four to Ram Manohar Lohia hospital and two to AIIMS.

Police Commissioner K K Paul said that the explosive, which went off in Paharganj, was planted either in a motorcycle or a rickshaw.

Market areas of Paharganj and Sarojini Nagar were choc-a-bloc with shoppers doing their last minute purchases for Diwali next week.

38 deaths were reported from Safdarjung Hospital, followed by 10 in Lady Hardinge, five in Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital and two in AIIMS, police said, adding more than 155 injured people were admitted to various hospitals. The dead included women and children.

The blasts are suspected to be the handiwork of banned Pakistan-based Lashker-e-Toiba outfit.

An alert was sounded in the capital with the police chief asking people to be vigilant.

He said unclaimed objects lying anywhere should not be touched and information about these should be passed on to the police immediately.

The public has also been asked to inform the police about any suspicious persons moving in their neighbourhood in the recent days or any other suspicious movement they might have seen.

Preliminary reports said that just about an hour ago, police had received a call about a bomb placed in a bag in the Paharganj area. But before the police could get to the place, the explosive went off.

Dehli hit with multiple bomb attacks

They're the new terrorist kids on the block and they call themselves "Indian Mujaheddin." Today, they set off 5 bombs in crowded areas of the city trying to create a huge body count. What do they want?

A little known group calling itself the Indian Mujaheddin asserted responsibility for the attacks, saying in e-mails sent to several news stations: "Stop us if you can. We strike with message of death. We are terrorizing for your sins."

"This is shameful, but they can't kill the spirit of Delhi's people," the city's mayor, Arti Mehra, told reporters as she visited one of the blast sites.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh also condemned the attacks and appealed for calm.

More than 400 people have been killed in bombings across India in the past three years. The attacks usually lead to waves of arrests but are rarely solved.

The body count is at 18 and is expected to rise while 60 have been injured.

The Indian Mujaheddin are really starting to make a name for themselves:

On July 26, at least 56 people were killed when a series of blasts tore through the western city of Ahmedabad. The blasts occurred outside a diamond market, near a hospital, next to a railway station and in a bus, a day after at least seven small explosions killed two people in Bangalore, a technology hub.

India's Intelligence Bureau received an e-mail from the Indian Mujaheddin about the attacks in Ahmedabad. A similar message was received in May when the pink-walled city of Jaipur, in northwestern India, was rocked by a series of simultaneous blasts that killed more than 83 people and seriously wounded more than 200.

Not much is known about the IM except that they are competent and lethal. It is believed by American intelligence that they are not a threat outside of India - for now. Nor do they necessarily have anything to do with the violence in Kashmir.

In other words, they appear to be a home grown Muslim terrorist outfit bent on killing Hindus and Muslims who don't see things their way.

It doesn't sound like we've heard the last from them.
